Pretty Perfect Vacations: Cruising

An Adult Spring Break on the Water

People from all over the country flock to the Sunshine State to escape the winter doldrums.  But what do Floridians do when they want to escape Florida? Florida is a peninsula, after all.  For those who can’t remember their grammar school geography, that means we are surrounded by water on three sides.  To escape, we either drive north or start paddling.  Or, in my case, I went cruising.

I recently accompanied a dear friend on an extended weekend cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas.  We sailed out of the Port of Tampa and experienced four blissful days beyond the reach of any mobile phone towers.  To be sure, internet and mobile access were available on the ship (for a fee), but it was nice to check out of reality for a bit.

This was my first cruise since high school and I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why I waited so long to cruise again.  It is the perfect vacation for busy people.  You just show up.  All meals and activities are planned for you, and you can choose what you want to do and when you want to do it.  There were tons of activities to choose from, including a mini golf course, spa, rock wall, swimming pools, bingo, a nightclub, and an endless gourmet buffet.

In the end, I sat by the pool, sipped on fruity drinks, enjoyed an excursion to the Mayan ruins at Tulum during our stopover in Cozumel, Mexico, and treated myself to a hot stone massage on the ship.  It was the perfect break from reality, and I would recommend cruising to anyone, whether you’re traveling solo, with a group or even a family.
