Conquer the Mango: Experts Show Us How to Cut a Mango.

Conquer the Mango: Learning from the pros.

Admit it.  We love the mango.  But, we stay away from it because it’s hard to cut.  Even with the fancy tools, it can be a messy process.  And, for what you get, is it worth it?  YES, YES, YES.  The answer is yes.

Recently at the Southeast Produce Council’s annual retail and food service conference (Southern Exposure 2012), the Live Pretty team roamed the exposition hall in awe of all the behind-the-scenes and consumer-facing businesses that bring us our produce.  We could have stayed there for hours (and we did…) talking to produce professionals and what they bring to the table.  One exhibitor in particular caught my attention – The National Mango Board.

I listened to others ahead of me stating the same issue I had:  “I love them, but hate to cut them.”  Well, the Marketing Manager was prepared.  I asked for her to show us how, as I’m sure she’s been asked to do it before.  And, sure enough she did.  With a little technique, she showed the ease to enjoying one of my favorite fruits.

Check it out:

Identify and cut just beside the ‘eye’ (small bump identifying pit).

Identify ‘eye’ on mango. Cut straight through flesh.

Slice #1 of pure mango goodness. A ‘cheek’ as they call it.

Cut on other side of pit – feel your way through it.

Remaining center show core pit.

Cut on each side of pit for additional pieces.

And there you have the beautiful flesh of the mango. If you’d like to see more, check out the video on Mango.org.

Ready to try it? Drop it in a martini for a Mango-infused Martini. Or, check out this recipe from the Mango Peeps: Mango Caprese Salad…I have a feeling you’ll be seeing some mango recipes on Live Pretty soon.

In the interim, conquer it.
