Blessing our Animal Children on St. Francis Assisi Day

St Francis Assisi Day Gives Us Another Reason to Stop and Pet our Animal Children

Our animal children share so much with us.  The furry ones cuddle with us at night.  They roll over and give us a nudge and a lick to greet us in the morning, and they are there for us at the end of the day, happily greeting us to give us the unconditional love that is one of the world’s best salves for all the stresses that come at us each and every day.

Celebrating our wonderful animals, this past weekend Aunt Abbey, Katherine and I jumped at the opportunity to take our three family cocker spaniels and my happy toddler in the surburb-mobile (my SUV) to the annual pet blessing at our church.  It was a wonderful, if not a lovely chaotic event, where our spaniels (and my munchkin) mingled with tons of beautiful animals including these lovely creatures.

So it is only fitting that today, on the actual St. Francis Assisi Day, that we thank God for the animals all around us — both those in our homes, and those out in the wild keeping our world in working order. To celebrate this saint feast day recognizing the patron saint of animals and ecology, I invite you to say this blessing while spending some special moments with you pet today.

“God, may (insert name of your pet) be a sign of your love and place of joy in the hearts of all who care for him/her. God bless this pet of yours.  May your love of this animal be a constant reminder of  God’s love for us and all of creation. Amen.”

God Bless You and Your Furry, Scaly and Feathery children!
