Sounds of Steel: Modern Pittsburgh Music to Get You Going

As we get ready for our Super Bowl party with a gaggle of Pittsburgh natives on Sunday, I have been racking my brain about what to write about … starting a wellness program this week is making dreaming of Super Bowl food a no-go.

But, this morning, as I was walking with my iPhone in hand at 6 am (enjoying the dark and breathing in the cool air as I yawned multiple times), I was reminded that two of my favorite musical artists for getting the energy going were from Pittsburgh — Rusted Root and Girl Talk.

If the Talking Heads and The Dave Matthews Band had a baby that was raised by happy hippies, you’d have Rusted Root.  Formed in Pittsburgh in the 90s, the band offers amazing get-you-dancing-like-a-banshee beats, gorgeous acoustic guitars and hypnotic voices.  You just have to check them out for your self.  Start out with their debut Cruel Sun … it is an awesome listen for a morning run or walk, or even to play as you watch the Steelers win another Super Bowl this Sunday.

Girl Talk — a.k.a Gregg Michael Gillis — was born in Pittsburgh in the early 80s (yah, he’s a a young one) and is more of a DJ than an artist.  But to call him a DJ is too little in my opinion.  He is what is known as a mashup artist.  He takes the music of 100’s of artists, samples their best beats and moments, then puts them together in all new songs that you can not help but admire.

Anyone who can mix the Beastie Boys, Lady Gaga, Iggy Pop, John Lennon and Bananaramma with today’s top rappers, creating music that will get everybody up from their seat, is brilliant in my opinion.

The best part, his music is available for free download here … all day, every day.  Speaking of … his most recent creation is an album called All Day — I recommend that everyone download it and put it on your iPod immediately.  Warning: This is not child-friendly music, but perfect for a workout or when you just want to let go and have fun.

Enjoy these two amazing music artists from Pittsburgh … relax, let go and dance around to modern the Sounds of the Steel City!
